AbstractWhile reading the impressive list of Bob's wide-ranging areas of interest in the symposium announcement, the name Gino Fano immediately caught my attention. Several visitors to Werner Heisenberg's Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Leipzig during the mid-1930s had come from Enrico Fermi's institute in Rome. One of these was an Italian postdoc in nuclear physics named Ugo Fano. I wondered if he was related to Gino Fano and, if so, what I could learn about Ugo's work and about what had happened to both Gino and Ugo during those difficult times.
